Riots in Minneapolis triggered by George Floyd’s death in May 2020 were largely concentrated along a 5-mile stretch of Lake Street south of downtown. Storefronts were set on fire and buildings were looted; some were entirely destroyed.

Many buildings were homes to the minority-owned small businesses. The estimated loss is more than half a billion dollars–one of the most destructive in United States history after the1992 Los Angeles riots.

This film tells the story of two small businesses Midori’s Floating World Cafe and Gandhi Mahal who lost their livelihoods during the few days of madness and destruction that changed the once-thriving Lake Street neighborhood beyond recognition. Both businesses were located on 27th Avenue and Lake Street, one of the most devastated areas of the city because of its proximity to the 3rd Precinct police station.
